What is Oil Pulling?

So what is the big hype about oil pulling? Aside from the fact that it is one of the oldest and most powerful ways of improving oral health, oil pulling is natural, easy,  and a cost effective way of caring for your teeth.

Oil pulling is an ancient Ayurvedic practice traditionally using sesame seed oil.  The technique involves swishing the oil in the mouth of 10-20 minutes, covering all areas under the tongue and between the teeth.

Essentially swishing the oil “pulls” inflammation causing bacteria and fungi from the crevices in the mouth.  The oils should then be spit out and not swallowed.  I usually spit it in the pail and not in my sink.  The more modern technique is to use coconut oil.  I personally like to combine the coconut oil with an essential oil, such as Clove oil or Thieves oil.  In addition, you can add a drop of Orange essential oil -which will help whiten your teeth as well.

There is also extensive research on the strength of Thyme essential oil.  Medical literature has shown that Thyme essential oil will kill over 60 strands of bacteria and 16 strains of fungi.  You could also add this to your oil pulling to enhance the effectiveness.

So what is the big hype about?  Having your dentist say “your teeth are in fantastic shape, what are you doing’?

Typically I use approximately 1 tsp. of coconut oil, 1 drop of thieves essential oil, and 1 drop of orange essential oil.  I swish for approximately 10 minutes while I shower and spit into the pail.  It’s easy, cost effective, and fantastic for oral care.
