What is anxiety? Do you have it? What does fear have to do with it? How do I experience anxiety? What are 2 ways to manage anxiety?
Anxiety is a normal healthy reaction to danger. Its sole purpose is to improve performance and survival. The physical reactions to this reaction are real. You cannot eliminate anxiety, but you can learn to control it.
EVERYONE has anxiety.
Normal anxiety is good. When it becomes excessive and difficult to control, over a number fo different events/activities and impacts social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning it becomes a disorder.
Our bodies respond to anxious thoughts by emitting stress hormones. This response is also known as Fight or Flight. Your body is physically responding to fear. Physically responses such as raising your heart rate, blood sugar, blood pressure, and pulse, slows digestion, dilates our pupils, causes us to breathe more shallowly, muscle get tense; cause your body to release stress chemicals which heighten all of your senses. Your reaction is fight or flight (flee, run). Stress chemicals are released when there is a threat and make the body faster or stronger to cope. When your body experiences anxiety, all of the physical symptoms and you don’t act (flight or flight) upon them the body does not release hormones (such as adrenaline). These hormones are released to give you a jump start but when you don’t act you body is only left to feel all the symptoms with no relief. Therefore, the anxiety symptoms increase. You can see where this leads … anxiety disorders. The inability to find ways to avoid the physical symptoms.
