Beauty DOES go more than skin deep. The skin is the largest organ of the body so it is not surprising that the things we put on our bodies effect our bodies. Did you know that many of the ingredients in your beauty products are toxic and banned in some countries?
Did you know that cosmetic products are not approved by the Food and Drug Administration before they go on the market, that toxic and allergenic ingredients do not need to be on the label, and the term “dermatologist tested” is just a marketing technique?
Sadly these are facts.
The FDA actually states on their website …
“Under the law, cosmetic products and ingredients do not need FDA premarket approval, with the exception of color additives.
AND …
“Companies and individuals who manufacture or market cosmetics have a legal responsibility to ensure the safety of their products. Neither the law nor FDA regulations require specific tests to demonstrate the safety of individual products or ingredients. The law also does not require cosmetic companies to share their safety information with FDA.”
So any company can make a product, put it on the market, say whatever they want about their own product, AND they don’t even need to test it to make sure it is safe (feel free to insert furious face here).
“Under the law, manufacturers are not required to register their cosmetic establishments or file their product formulations with FDA, and no registration number is required to import cosmetics into the United States.”
So, any country can ship in … whatever they want. Does this sound safe to you?
Sadly, these are the ingredients that are in our cosmetics and the things we are using daily.
So … what can you do? The Environmental Working Group has a great new tool called EWG Skin Deep where you can search products. Another great free app called Think Dirty, also the same concept scans beauty products and rates them based on their ingredients.
