Don’t Judge a Book by its Cover

At times, I am quite surprised by my judgments and opinions. Recently a friend recommended a book called The Energy Bus by Jon Gordon.  As she said the name of the book, I wrote it down in my planner.  I must have at least 3-4 books on my “to read” list, but for some reason I was avoiding ordering this book.  Usually when a book is recommended, I immediately purchase the book or audio.  For this book, it was different -there was something that made me NOT want to rush out to get it.  However, the constant nagging in my mind along with the “I have nothing better to do but laundry today” urged me to order the audio version of the book.

Boy was I wrong, very wrong.  The Energy Bus is probably the best book I have read (well listened to) since Oola: Finding Balance in an Unbalanced World.  So as I reflected, I wondered what made me so hesitant to read this book.

And then I realized it was the title. You know the old saying “don’t judge a book by its cover.”  As I reflected I also realized how narrow minded I was because of its title.  After reading the book, I realized I would’ve been a fool to not read the book because of its title.  Then I started to think… don’t judge a book by its cover. Then I thought … or its title.

How many of us go through life and immediately make judgments and formulate opinions before we have all the information?  This was certainly the case for me and a powerful lesson as I reflected.

As I began to write this article, I was also thinking about “titles”.  In life and in business, titles may indicate you have a prestigious background or experience in a certain field.  Do we judge people based on these titles?  Well, let’s think about this for a minute, does your job title say a lot about you? Well, it probably tells us what you do and where you fit into an organization.

I know I am certainly judged by my title.  Are you?  But the bigger question is … do you judge a title?
